Dozens of people have already taken advantage of the new rules for official gender reassignment, which will require a medical certificate from July. Previously, gender reassignment was conditional on castration, which the Constitutional Court found unconstitutional in 2024. After meeting the new specific conditions, transgender people can change their first and last names.
The authorities' intentions to impose liability for the dissemination of "information aimed at forming citizens' ideas about the attractiveness of homosexual relationships, gender reassignment, and childlessness" contradict the Constitution of Belarus and the state's international obligations.
