A male howler monkey, an endangered species, died on December 4, 2025, in the municipality of Palenque, Chiapas, due to an infestation of the cattle screwworm, according to sources consulted by the newspaper Excélsior. This case marked the first death of a wild animal in Mexico from this pest, which was believed to have been eradicated since 1991.
