French Prime Minister François Bayrou is trying to reduce the budget deficit and will present the main elements of the 2026 budget on Tuesday, which includes cuts and tax increases. The online publication Politico writes that Bayrou's proposed budget is so unpopular that it could lead to the fall of his minority government.

France's Prime Minister will try to reduce the deficit from 5.4% of GDP this year to 4.6% next year. But without significant tax hikes, the move will necessarily entail a reduction in public spending.
The Prime Minister must present the 2026 budget guidelines on Tuesday 15 July. In order to reduce the deficit, one of the assumptions would be to renew certain expenditure in the same way between 2025 and 2026.
The Prime Minister's budget, which includes a 40 billion austerity plan, is putting the fragile parliamentary majority to the test - with the departure of the Socialists and opposition from the right and left, will this really be the final attempt?
