BRITISH COLUMBIA, CANADA, JUL 25 – Three workers were trapped by two large rockfalls and rescued after more than 60 hours underground with support from drones, remote-controlled equipment, and emergency teams.
- At the Red Chris mine in Iskut, Newmont Corp. said rescue crews reached three workers late Thursday, after more than 60 hours trapped in a refuge following two rockfalls on Tuesday morning.
- Since Tuesday, July 22, three Hy-Tech Drilling workers were trapped, after two rockfalls blocked the access tunnel, cutting off their escape route at the Red Chris mine.
- According to Newmont Corp., the rescue involved drones, a remote-controlled scoop, and a rockfall measuring 20 to 30 meters long and seven to eight meters high.
- Rescued workers received medical and wellness support, and their families were notified post-safety, ensuring their well-being and communication.
- The company will share lessons learned across the industry, and Newmont Corp. expressed gratitude to its industry partners.
