1 Dead, 2 Injured in House Explosion in Wonder Lake, Illinois
Officials said one victim died and two others were injured, including one airlifted by helicopter, after the blast destroyed a home and damaged nearby houses.
On Sunday evening, a house explosion in the 7400 block of Birch Drive in Wonder Lake left one person dead and two others injured, destroying the home and damaging two nearby properties.
Wonder Lake Fire Protection District Chief Matt Yegge dispatched crews at 7:50 p.m. Sunday to an "active structure fire with significant damage and multiple victims," requesting a MABAS Box Alarm for additional EMS resources.
Two injured men were transported to Loyola University Medical Center with "serious injuries," according to a McHenry County Sheriff Office news release, while neighbors reported debris falling from the sky shortly after 7:30 p.m.
Investigators from the Illinois State Fire Marshal, the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives, and Nicor Gas are jointly probing the cause, with the site remaining under investigation Monday morning.
The Wonder Lake Fire Protection District extended "deepest condolences to all those affected by this tragic event," though authorities have not released the identity of the deceased or conditions of the injured.
