House cleaner shot to death on front porch after going to wrong house in Indianapolis suburb
Maria Florinda Rios Perez de Velasquez was fatally shot after mistakenly entering a wrong home, with the case complicated by Indiana’s stand-your-ground law, police said.
- On Wednesday, 32-year-old Maria Florinda Rios Perez was fatally shot in the head and found dead on the front porch of a Whitestown, Indiana, home after mistakenly entering it for a cleaning job.
- Arriving for a cleaning job, Perez and Mauricio Velasquez had checked the client address twice but held keys for a different home, mistakenly approaching the house in front of the intended one.
- Officers responded to a 911 call at around 6:50 a.m. and found the woman and her husband on the front porch; police said the shot came from inside and the Boone County Coroner's Office classified the death as homicide.
- The case has been referred to Boone County Prosecutor Kent T. Eastwood, and the office will review the police report next week to decide if charges apply under Indiana `stand-your-ground` law.
- Perez's family says the mother of four, youngest 11 months old, inspired over $100,000 raised on GoFundMe pages as the case echoes Ralph Yarl and other similar shootings in recent years.
