Two Injured and Dozens Evacuated in Scarborough House Explosion
Fire crews, police and the gas board responded as 50 to 70 homes and businesses were evacuated after the blast, officials said.
On Friday, an explosion struck a residential property on Cambridge Street in Scarborough at 5:46 AM, prompting immediate response from North Yorkshire Fire and Rescue Service and North Yorkshire Police.
Crews from Scarborough, Sherburn, and Robin Hoods Bay responded to extinguish the fire using breathing apparatus, while authorities evacuated around 50 to 70 nearby homes and businesses as a precaution.
Local business owner Dave Bigsby of Lillys Reptile Rescue described the scene as "an absolute mess," stating the explosion devastated the building and the one next door, forcing closures at Mojos Music Cafe and nearby Aldi.
Alison Hume, Member of Parliament for Scarborough and Whitby, thanked emergency services and staff at The Street for providing shelter to evacuated residents while urging the public to avoid the area.
Emergency services remain on-site as investigations continue, though authorities have not confirmed whether anyone was present in the house or if injuries occurred during the blast.
