Holocaust survivors group urges German auction house to halt sale of artifacts
- The International Auschwitz Committee, a Berlin-based survivors group, demanded cancellation of the Felzmann auction house sale titled `The System of Terror` scheduled Monday of more than 600 Holocaust artifacts.
- The committee said many items name individuals and therefore raise privacy concerns, while Christoph Heubner said persecution records belong to families and should be in museums or memorial exhibitions.
- The dealer advertised 627 items and more than 600 lots, including Gestapo index cards, prisoners' letters, and a file documenting forced sterilisation at Dachau , with starting bids of 350 euros and 120 euros.
- On Sunday the auction listing was removed from Auktionhaus Felzmann's website by mid-afternoon, while the house did not immediately respond to media inquiries.
- Intervening officials and survivors pressed for return of items to families and museums as Felzmann auction house agreed Sunday to cancel after Germany's foreign minister and the International Auschwitz Committee intervened.
