Histadrut chair among detainees in massive corruption probe
More than 400 people, including senior Histadrut officials and local authority heads, were detained or questioned in a bribery and money laundering probe, police said.
- Lahav 433 investigators executed dawn raids Monday at Histadrut's Tel Aviv headquarters, detaining chairperson Arnon Bar-David and his partner for questioning.
- A two-year undercover investigation by the national fraud unit and Lahav 433 uncovered an alleged scheme where an insurance industry businessperson arranged appointments to government companies to steer workers' insurance business to agencies he controlled.
- Police said the investigation, code-named `Hand in Hand`, spans many committees and actors, involving 350 individuals connected to workers' committees, with 55 search locations and more than 400 people detained across municipalities including Rishon LeZion and Harish.
- Suspects are due to appear later today at the Rishon LeZion Magistrate's Court, with no formal charges filed and all entitled to the presumption of innocence.
- The operation implicates executives from El Al Airlines, Israel Railways, KKL-JNF, and the Wingate Institute and threatens the Histadrut, Israel's largest labor federation representing roughly 800,000 workers.
