High-speed boats and drones promised for elite commandos in tweak to defence spending plan
The revised plan adds £500 million for commandos and £100 million for drones, boats and communications as ministers shift spending to frontline kit.
Britain's elite commando forces will receive a £500 million investment as part of a long-awaited overhaul of the nation's Defence Investment Plan.
Defence Secretary Dan Jarvis secured an additional £1 billion for the plan during Treasury negotiations, exceeding the £13.5 billion offer that prompted his predecessor, John Healey, to resign earlier this month.
Around £100 million targets new technologies including strike drones and "next-generation communications," with investments prioritizing operations in the High North and Arctic Circle amid escalating Russian activity.
Outgoing Prime Sir Keir Starmer intends to publish the plan before the July 7 Nato summit. The Defence Secretary told the Press Association on Saturday that "real progress" had been made in recent days.
This strategy could create friction with likely successor Andy Burnham, who may prefer to finalize future military funding. Jarvis added the plan ensures forces have equipment to "stay ahead of our adversaries.
