There's Another Supermoon This Week. How Often Do They Occur?
The Cold Moon is the last of three supermoons this fall and will appear up to 14% larger and 30% brighter, NASA says.
- On Dec. 4, the final supermoon of 2025 will peak at 6:14 P.M. EST, offering Canadians one last chance to see this event until November 2026, NASA and The Almanac report.
- Because a full moon coincides with perigee, it becomes a supermoon; this December full moon will be about 357,219 kilometers away due to the Moon's elliptical orbit.
- NASA notes the magnitude: up to 14 in size and brightness, while Noah Petro said 'I think naturally I sort of always just sort of see it as being brighter because there's no leaves around on the trees and the sky is that much clearer' .
- King tides are expected with this supermoon, bringing higher tides between Dec. 4-6 and a second round to the Oregon Coast, where mostly cloudy skies with 73-95% cloud cover may limit views.
- Indigenous traditions like Mohawk and Mohican name December's full moon the Cold Moon and Long Night Moon, occurring ahead of Artemis II and before the winter 2028 sequence .
