Hegseth Strikes Female and Black Navy Officers From Promotion List: New York Times
Hegseth’s intervention left a 22-name slate with no women and only two nonwhite officers, according to the New York Times.
- Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth recently blocked the promotions of at least seven Navy officers, leaving a slate of 22 one-star admiral nominees that includes no women, despite females making up roughly 21 percent of the active-duty Navy.
- Hegseth asserts he is correcting "gender and demographic engineering" he claims blunted Pentagon troop effectiveness. Internal records suggest officers were targeted after appearing on websites identifying "woke" military personnel, including those who served as a "diversity liaison officer."
- The 22-nominee list now includes only two Black officers, though racial minorities account for approximately 38 percent of the force. At least two of the removed officers are women and two are Black men.
- Hegseth has refused to explain the removals. Sen. Jack Reed, the top Democrat on the Armed Services Committee, warned that Hegseth's actions are hollowing out the military's bench of experience.
- Since taking office, Hegseth has fired or sidelined senior officers, nearly 60 percent of whom are women or Black. These interventions continue to reshape the military's top ranks for years to come.

Pete Hegseth Blocking Promotions For Black, Women Navy Officers, Too
Source: Ezra Acayan / Getty Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth has been trying his best to make the title “Secretary of War” catch on, but perhaps he’d have better luck calling himself the Secretary of Military Racism and Misogyny, as that descriptor would better apply to what he is and all he has done since becoming a member of President Donald Trump’s white nationalist administration. Last month, we reported on how he was systematically blocking B…
