Mill Owners Among 12 Injured by Searsmont Explosion that Killed Firefighter
Three people remain in critical condition at Massachusetts General Hospital as state and federal investigators examine the cause of the blast.
On Friday, May 15, a silo explosion at the 145-year-old Robbins Lumber mill in Searsmont killed Morrill volunteer firefighter Andrew Cross and injured 12 others, drawing a massive response from first responders across Waldo County.
Eight people remained hospitalized Monday following the blast, while volunteer firefighter Aaron Heald and others have returned home; five patients continue treatment at Maine Medical Center in Portland.
The Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives is helping state investigators examine the site to determine the fire's origin, though high winds have complicated aerial mapping and evidence preservation efforts.
Hammond Lumber Company donated $100,000 to the Maine Strong Memorial Foundation to assist victims and families, while co-owner Catherine Robbins-Halsted expressed gratitude for community support and pledged commitment to rebuilding.
While survivors face a 'long and challenging road to recovery,' the mill remains closed for at least a week as investigators have conducted over 50 interviews to understand the sequence of events.
