In Ukraine, in the midst of a Russian invasion, the destruction of the Kakhovka Dam on June 6, 2023, freed 16.4 cubic kilometres of water downstream, causing deadly flooding and an ecological disaster with lasting effects. Behind the visible destruction, a more insidious problem emerged: the exposure of sediments loaded with heavy metals accumulated for decades.
