Early harvest has begun for geographically protected Çanakkale tomatoes. This product, known for its delicious taste, is being sent to Istanbul as its first stop in the market.
In Torbalı district of Izmir, tomatoes grown on 50,000 acres of land are dried under the scorching sun. Prepared with the labor of approximately a thousand workers, these dried tomatoes are exported to countries such as Italy, the USA, the Netherlands, and Brazil at a price of 170 TL. A 15% increase in yield is expected this year.
As the early harvest of geographically registered Çanakkale tomatoes begins, seasonal rains and high humidity have reduced yields. The first products harvested from the fields in Kumkale are on their way to Istanbul, but farmers are experiencing crop losses.
