Harpswell Issues Warning After Great White Shark Sightings
HARPSWELL, MAINE, JUL 16 – Officials placed shark notification flags at Cedar Beach after two great white shark sightings within 48 hours near the site of Maine's only fatal shark attack five years ago.
- On Wednesday, Harpswell Marine Resources and Harbor Management issued a warning at Cedar Beach after two documented great white shark sightings east of Bailey Island within 48 hours, alerting beachgoers to exercise caution.
- After the 2020 attack, Maine's first fatal shark attack, Julie Dimperio Holowach, 63, of New York City, was killed by a great white shark off Bailey Island.
- To enhance tracking, the Maine Department of Marine Resources partnered with the University of Maine, Bigelow Laboratory, Atlantic Shark Institute and Atlantic White Shark Conservancy to deploy acoustic sensors, last year there were 93 detections in Maine.
- Harpswell Marine Resources and Harbor Management said, `Out of an abundance of caution, due to two documented great white shark sightings observed in 48 hours East of Bailey Island, shark notification flags are being displayed at Cedar Beach,` and officials asked beachgoers to take photos and report sightings.
- According to the National Oceanographic Data Center, there are typically two to three great white shark sightings off the Maine coast each summer from May to December, mainly peaking July to September.
