UP Strengthens Security for Kanwar Yatra Amid Controversy
HARIDWAR, UTTARAKHAND, JUL 7 – Uttarakhand officials will cover 28 liquor shop signboards on the Kanwar Yatra route to respect devotees' religious sentiments during the fortnight-long pilgrimage starting July 11.
- The Kanwar Yatra pilgrimage will begin on July 11, lasting for about two weeks across Uttar Pradesh, Uttarakhand, and other states.
- The Yatra involves devotees carrying Ganga water from Haridwar to Shiva temples, prompting governments to strengthen security and regulate shops along the route.
- Authorities have deployed specialized police units, established medical and water facilities, and mandated vendors to display identity cards and shop licenses for pilgrims' convenience.
- BJP MLA Tarvinder Singh Marwah urged Home Minister Amit Shah to temporarily shut liquor and meat shops, noting that during Navratri, 70-80% of shops closed successfully, which he called 'great success.'
- These measures aim to maintain law and order, respect the Yatra's sanctity, prevent untoward incidents, and ensure a smooth pilgrimage under heavy security and social media monitoring.
