The Czech Republic has officially ended a 250-year-old industry on Wednesday, when the last coal van left me Stoneva, reports TVPWorld.
Sadness and pride were visible in the eyes of hundreds of current and former miners and employees of the ČSM Mine in Stonava and the mining company OKD on Wednesday morning. Just before noon, the final bell rang for deep-sea hard coal mining not only in the Karviná region, but also throughout the Czech Republic.
Mining is no longer economically viable due to high costs
Stonava (Karvinsko) - Miners today removed the last cart of coal from the ČSM Mine in Stonava in the Karvinsko region. Symbolically, after almost 250 years, they ended the mining of hard coal in the Ostrava-Karvinsko district and in the entire Czech Republic. The ceremony in the crowded area of the so-called pit head was watched by dozens of invited guests, while other people watched it outside on two large-screen screens.
On February 4th, hard coal mining in the Czech Republic will officially end. On this day, the last coal cart will leave the ČSM mine in Stonava in the Karviná region. The Havířovské Festival will also take place in Ostrava, commemorating the end of a key chapter in the region's history.
