Taiwan Says It Drove Away Chinese Research Ship

Taiwan’s coast guard said it used multiple ships to stop the Tongji from suspected illegal survey work and force it to leave after five days.

  • On Monday, the Taiwan Coast Guard reported it successfully tracked and warned off the Chinese research vessel Tongji after five consecutive days of monitoring the ship suspected of conducting unauthorized hydrological surveys near Taiwan.
  • Taiwan detected the Tongji on May 7, approximately 29 nautical miles southeast of Eluanbi, where the vessel was observed lowering cables into the water to deploy scientific instruments for suspected illegal survey operations.
  • Using wake interference, the Coast Guard Administration's Chenggong vessel approached the Tongji and broadcast messages to "forcefully expel the vessel, prohibiting it from conducting related activities." The ship retrieved its survey instruments and altered course.
  • Following five consecutive days of monitoring, the Tongji retrieved its survey instruments on Monday and reached a position 21 nautical miles outside restricted waters before continuing westward away from Taiwan.
  • Taipei views these actions as "grey zone" harassment designed to exhaust its forces, while the Coast Guard warned that attempts to conduct illegal survey activities undermine regional peace and stability.
