As part of a U.S.-brokered ceasefire, militants returned the remains of one hostage, with 24 bodies repatriated so far and four still held, Israeli officials said.
- Hamas, armed wing, and Palestinian Islamic Jihad, armed wing, said earlier on Thursday they would return a hostage's body around 8 p.m., with an International Committee of the Red Cross team en route to receive it.
- The ceasefire agreement requires militants to return all hostage remains, and since Oct. 10, militants have already returned 24 deceased hostages under the US-brokered ceasefire agreement.
- Militants said the remains were recovered in Khan Yunis, southern Gaza, and the ICRC then transferred the coffin to Israeli authorities to be sent to Tel Aviv for identification.
- If Israeli officials confirm the body, three more remains would still need recovery and handover from Gaza, and the ceasefire will not advance to disarmament or an international stabilization force.
- Identification is complicated because Gaza Health Ministry says 315 remains have been received, while Israel accuses Hamas of delays and partial returns amid mutual accusations.
