NEW YORK CITY, JUL 28 – Shane Tamura, with a documented history of mental illness, killed four people including an off-duty NYPD officer before taking his own life, police said.
- At 345 Park Avenue, Shane Tamura, 27-year-old gunman, opened fire with an M4-style rifle, killing five, including Officer Didarul Islam, and dying by a self-inflicted gunshot.
- A note recovered at the scene indicated Shane Tamura, 27-year-old gunman, claimed he suffered from chronic traumatic encephalopathy linked to NFL.
- After shooting Officer Islam, he then fired indiscriminately, wounding a woman behind a pillar and a security guard at the building, before riding an elevator to the 33rd floor.
- Immediately after the shooting, a column of a couple dozen police officers responded as streets were closed, nearby buildings evacuated, and Jessica Tisch honored Officer Islam, NYPD said.
- Amid heightened security concerns, landlords and tenants are reevaluating measures, with KPG Funds already using Bluetooth and facial recognition technology and tenants at 345 Park temporarily closing offices.
