Bodycam Video Shows Ohio Shoplifting Suspect Pulling Gun on Police Officer
Shane Newman faces multiple charges including attempted murder after a gun failed to fire when pointed at an officer during a shoplifting incident, police said.
- At about 1:30 p.m. Thursday at the Walmart on Atlantic Boulevard, Canton, Ohio, Shane Newman pulled a handgun, pointed it at a Canton police officer, and the gun clicked when fired.
- After employees confronted them about an item taken from a shelf, Walmart employees told officers they caught Newman and Katerina Jeffrey shoplifting, prompting Canton police to respond to the Atlantic Boulevard store.
- Body camera footage shows Newman tried to rack and reload the weapon, while the theft-prevention officer jumped on him causing the gun to drop and officers found pills, warrants and two bullets.
- Prosecutors charged Newman with attempted murder, assault on a peace officer, robbery, aggravated drug possession and illegally possessing a weapon after a prior felony conviction, while Jeffrey faces complicity to commit robbery charges as Canton police took both suspects into custody.
