Gujarat Police Bust Interstate Cyber Racket Allegedly Linked to Bomb Threat Emails
Police said the suspects had 5,13,847 email IDs and passwords and used cryptocurrency wallets and Bangladesh-based support to send threats.
- On Monday, the Gujarat Police Cyber Centre of Excellence arrested Roshan Kumar Bhumihar from Bhagalpur, Bihar, and Gulshan Kumar Kaushal Singh from Deoghar, Jharkhand, for allegedly sending bomb threat emails to government offices.
- The investigation began after a threatening email reached the Legislative and Parliamentary Affairs Department on September 10, targeting the Chief Minister, Prime Minister, and Union Home Minister, with references to countries supporting India during the BRICS summit in Delhi.
- Police recovered a list containing 5,13,847 unique email IDs and passwords from the two accused, which investigators suspect were used to send threats and commit other cybercrimes.
- Preliminary findings suggest the accused received financial support from Bangladesh associates, with cryptocurrency wallets allegedly used to conduct illicit transactions and facilitate the network's operations.
- Authorities have urged citizens not to panic upon receiving threatening emails, instead advising them to contact the 1930 cybercrime helpline and avoid circulating details on social media.
