Guide Scales Everest for the 20th Time, Says He’s Not Ready to Quit
Kenton Cool broke his own record for non-Sherpa guides and said commercial operators should be more careful in choosing climbers.
On Friday, Briton Kenton Cool reached the 8,849-meter summit of Mount Everest, marking his 20th ascent and setting a record for the most climbs by a non-Sherpa guide.
Cool told reporters in Kathmandu on Sunday he is not ready to retire, despite previously stating he would climb Everest maybe one more time before switching to smaller peaks.
A record 274 climbers scaled the peak on Wednesday, utilizing a short window of good weather that forced large crowds at the summit in Nepal.
Record-Setting guide Kami Rita Sherpa suggested limiting climber numbers due to overcrowding, though Cool argued authorities should prioritize permit holders' experience and knowledge over volume control.
With the northern route in China's Tibet closed this year, Nepalese authorities issued 494 permits for the southern side in Nepal, each requiring a $15,000 fee.
