UK grocery inflation eases with Iran conflict yet to fully hit prices
Shoppers used promotions for 30.3% of sales last month as full-price spending barely rose, Worldpanel said.
- UK grocery price inflation slowed to 3.1% year-on-year in May, down from April's 3.8%, according to Worldpanel by Numerator, as the Government announced plans to suspend tariffs on select food imports.
- Shoppers increasingly relied on promotions to manage costs, with 30.3% of sales involving deals last month compared to 28.4% a year earlier, while spending on full-price items grew only 0.1%.
- Discounter Lidl reached a record 8.6% market share over the 12 weeks to May 17, becoming Britain's fifth-largest grocer, while Ocado's 10.2% sales growth marked its slowest expansion since July 2024.
- Waitrose and Marks & Spencer posted stronger growth at 3% and 9.3% respectively, as Fraser McKevitt, head of retail and consumer insight at Worldpanel, said the easing inflation is "welcome news for shoppers."
- Consumers remain braced for potential food price hikes from Middle East crisis impacts despite current relief, as the Government's tariff suspension on biscuits, chocolate, dried fruit and nuts provides only short-term respite.
