Tennis-Dutch Shocks for Zverev, Medvedev as Seeds Fall in Canadian Open
The upsets left only four of the ATP Masters 1000 event’s top 10 seeds in the draw, officials said.
- On Wednesday at the Canadian Open in Montreal, Alexander Zverev and Daniil Medvedev suffered second-round upsets against Dutch opponents, while seventh seed Taylor Fritz also exited the tournament.
- Tallon Griekspoor defeated Zverev 6-7 6-2 6-4, while Botic van de Zandschulp overcame Medvedev 6-3 7-6, leaving the ATP 1000 event with only four of the top 10 seeds remaining.
- The tournament field thinned further as Fritz lost 7-5 6-3 to Argentine Thiago Agustin Tirante, while sixth seed Flavio Cobolli and 10th seed Andrey Rublev lost opening matches and fifth seed Felix Auger-Aliassime withdrew with a back injury.
- After claiming his third victory over the French Open champion, Griekspoor said, "I've been very close to throwing in the towel a couple of times," crediting tactical changes to the upset.
- The tournament field was already depleted, as world number one Jannik Sinner and 24-times Grand Slam champion Novak Djokovic skipped the event, while world number two Carlos Alcaraz remains sidelined by a wrist injury.
