  • On May 7, 2025, a grey whale was found stranded on the shoreline of a well-known beach within Pacific Rim National Park Reserve, close to Tofino on Vancouver Island, British Columbia.
  • Parks Canada first spotted the whale floating offshore on May 6, and the whale belongs to a population listed as special concern under Canada's Species at Risk Act since 2005.
  • The marine mammal response team from the Fisheries Department is partnering alongside the Tla-o-qui-aht community and officials from Parks Canada to secure the whale and carry out a necropsy aimed at identifying its cause of death.

  • Access to the carcass is restricted for health and respect reasons, and the Tla-o-qui-aht First Nation will decide how to steward the whale's remains, which may provide important nutrients to the environment.
