Democrat Pia Dandiya wins election to U.S. House in Florida’s 22nd Congressional District
Dandiya won 51.9% of the vote in a newly redrawn open seat that could help decide control of the House, officials said.
On Tuesday, Democrat Pia Dandiya won the race for Florida's 22nd Congressional District, defeating Republican Casey Askar in one of South Florida's most closely watched contests, CBS News projected.
Florida's Republican-controlled legislature redrew the district earlier this year, creating an open-seat contest that shifted west and south from its former coastal Palm Beach County configuration.
Dandiya, a former educator and high school principal, secured 56.5 percent of the vote, defeating Askar, a businessman and Marine Corps veteran who campaigned on conservative economic policies.
This victory makes the 36-year-old the first Indian American elected to the U.S. House of Representatives from Florida and the 10th Indian American elected to Congress in national history.
Dandiya will serve a two-year term when the new Congress convenes in January, representing a district that President Donald Trump carried by approximately 10 percentage points in 2024.
