GOP Rep. Byron Donalds wins Florida governor’s race, becoming the state’s first Black leader
Donalds defeated Democrat David Jolly with nearly 50% of the vote, becoming Florida’s first Black governor and extending Republican control of the office.
On Tuesday, U.S. Rep. Byron Donalds defeated Democrat David Jolly to become Florida's next governor, making history as the first Black governor in Florida and the first Black Republican governor in the United States.
Donalds secured the Republican nomination with 47.8% of the vote in the August 18 primary, with early endorsements from President Donald Trump and Gov. Ron DeSantis solidifying his path to the general election.
Focusing on parental rights and insurance reform, Donalds served in the Florida House from 2016 to 2020 before winning a seat in Congress in 2020. His legislative priorities shaped his gubernatorial agenda.
This victory extends Republican control of the governor's office, held by the GOP since 1998. Former state Sen. Bryan Avila of Miami-Dade County served as Donalds' running mate and will become lieutenant governor.
The incoming administration will succeed term-limited Gov. Ron DeSantis in January 2027, managing state governance while continuing focus on property tax reduction and immigration law enforcement.
