Greens Name Councillor as Candidate to Replace Burnham as Manchester Mayor
The Greens are pitching the race as a contest with Reform and have already bought campaign ads as they seek to build on 19% support in May.
Green Party leader Zack Polanski unveiled Geraldine Coggins as the party's candidate for the Greater Manchester mayoral by-election yesterday, June 20.
The vacancy arose after Andy Burnham became an MP, ending his nine years as mayor and triggering a July 30 vote.
Coggins, currently the Green group leader on Trafford Council, replaces the party's initial choice, Chris Kennedy, who withdrew after social media controversy.
Labour is expected to announce its candidate by June 26, with Manchester city council leader Bev Craig considered the front-runner to defend the seat.
Polanski frames the contest as a 'straight race' between the Green Party and Reform, seeking to build on momentum from recent electoral gains.
