Government poll finds nearly half of Canadians think ‘too many immigrants’ are coming
A government-commissioned survey found 47% of respondents think Canada is admitting too many immigrants, while 61% say immigration supports economic growth.
A government-commissioned survey by Phoenix Strategic Perspective found 47 per cent of Canadians believe the country is admitting 'too many' immigrants, while 38 per cent said the level is about right, The Canadian Press reported.
This figure marks a decline since late 2024, when a similar government poll reported 54 per cent of respondents saying 'too many' immigrants were coming to Canada, according to research conducted between Nov. 12 and Dec. 4, 2025.
When informed of the federal government's permanent resident targets, opinions shifted; 39 per cent of respondents deemed intake too high, while 43 per cent said it was appropriate, according to the poll.
Fifty-Five per cent of respondents agreed that 'immigration puts too much pressure' on local housing availability, while 61 per cent agreed immigration supports economic growth and 56 per cent prioritized helping unemployed Canadians find work.
The government aims to reduce the temporary resident population to five per cent of total population by the end of 2027, as debates regarding temporary workers and international students continue in Canada.
