Controversial Jackdaw gas field expected to be approved by government
The project would supply about 6.5% of UK Continental Shelf gas and heat more than 1.4 million homes, supporters said.
On Wednesday, the UK Government is expected to formally approve the Jackdaw gas field, located 241.4km east of Aberdeen, which could heat more than 1.4 million homes.
Last year, the Court of Session in Edinburgh voided the original permits, ruling that the Conservative government unlawfully failed to assess the climate impact of burning the extracted gas.
Labour officials argue approval does not violate manifesto pledges against new drilling, as the project obtained licenses years ago; however, Uplift director Tessa Khan said the development would "do nothing to cut our energy bills."
Energy Secretary Miatta Fahnbulleh said a decision on Rosebank will take "a bit longer," while Offshore Energies UK CEO David Whitehouse urged the government to approve a "bigger pipeline of projects."
Prime Minister Andy Burnham has advocated for a "pragmatic approach" to North Sea resources, and the Scottish Government is expected to welcome the decision to safeguard energy security and jobs.
