£2.5bn Boost for Rolls-Royce to Develop 'Next-Generation' Gas Turbine Engines
The 10-year program aims to support 3,300 jobs by 2029 and could add £120 billion to the UK economy, officials said.
On Wednesday, Chancellor John Healey announced a £2.5 billion joint investment with Rolls-Royce to develop next-generation jet engines for the narrowbody aircraft market, marking a major commitment to British aerospace manufacturing.
Rolls is targeting the £1.6 trillion narrowbody market it exited in 2012, after negotiations previously stalled under former Prime Minister Keir Starmer, sparking fears the company would develop engines overseas.
The deal supports 3,300 high-value jobs by the end of 2029, with promises of tens of thousands more roles if engines secure a position on new narrowbody aircraft, adding £120 billion to the UK economy.
Chief Executive Tufan Erginbilgic hailed the agreement as a "landmark moment," emphasizing the partnership is vital for the UK to remain one of only two countries capable of designing and servicing commercial airliner engines.
Rolls will select UK sites for state-of-the-art engine assembly and testing facilities, with these engines targeted for narrowbody aircraft expected to enter commercial service in the mid-to-late 2030s.
