November SNAP Benefits Will Roll Out in Stages to Certain Groups Only

Virginia launches a new state-funded food assistance program providing weekly benefits totaling about $37.5 million per week during federal SNAP delays, officials said.

  • On Tuesday, Gov. Glenn Youngkin announced the Virginia Emergency Nutrition Assistance program to ensure more than 850,000 Virginians keep meal assistance amid SNAP delays.
  • Facing a possible halt in federal funding, Youngkin said the ongoing federal government shutdown threatened November SNAP benefits, prompting the state to prepare VENA as a contingency.
  • VENA will deliver benefits weekly, loading state funds onto existing EBT cards with staggered distributions on Nov. 3, Nov. 5 and Nov. 7, funded from the state surplus at $37.5 million per week.
  • Youngkin also directed emergency funding to food banks in Virginia, including $1,000,000 incremental support, while some SNAP recipients in Virginia face brief disruptions, the Legal Aid Justice Center said.
  • Youngkin stressed the state's financial commitment, saying `We will be doing it every week for as long as we can` and urged Virginians to pressure Senators Tim Kaine and Mark Warner to reopen government.
