Gov. Mills endorses Hannah Pingree in race for governor
Mills says Pingree can unite Democrats and deliver for Maine people as the governor’s race narrows with early voting underway.
On Tuesday, Governor Janet Mills endorsed former Maine House Speaker Hannah Pingree in the five-way Democratic primary to succeed her in the Blaine House.
Pingree directed the Governor's Office of Policy Innovation and the Future for seven years, collaborating with Mills on state challenges ranging from climate change to broadband expansion.
The June 9 primary features five Democratic candidates; Pingree faces four opponents, including frontrunner and former Maine Center Disease Control and Prevention Director Nirav Shah.
Mills emphasized Pingree's capacity to "stand up to Donald Trump," highlighting her potential to defend state protections against federal overreach on issues like transgender rights.
Pingree, who has raised $1.9 million as of late April, stated she is ready to "protect reproductive rights" and make housing and health care affordable.
