Oklahoma Principal Who Thwarted School Shooter Creates Fund to Support Students
Gov. Kevin Stitt gave Kirk Moore the Heroic Oklahoman award after he disarmed a gunman and prevented further injuries, officials said.
On Thursday, Governor Kevin Stitt presented the "Heroic Oklahoman" award to Pauls Valley High School Principal Kirk Moore during a state Board of Education meeting, honoring his bravery in disarming a gunman.
Surveillance footage from the April 7 incident shows Moore charging the gunman and taking away the weapon; he was shot in the leg, though no other individuals were injured or killed.
The 37-year district veteran announced the "Principal Kirk Moore Fund," which has reached nearly $100,000, with corporate donors including Love's, OERB, and Hobby Lobby contributing more than $60,000.
Moore intends to distribute the money to Pauls Valley alumni who attended the district for at least three years and pursue careers as teachers or first responders.
Students impacted by the shooting celebrated graduation Friday night after completing the school year virtually; Moore, who stated he is "ready to move on with life," plans to provide graduation presents to those entering public service careers.
