GOP urges Democrat governor to deploy National Guard to Charlotte as crime surges

Republican lawmakers cite a 200% rise in Uptown Charlotte murders and police staffing shortages as reasons for requesting National Guard deployment to address local violence.

  • On Wednesday, Nov. 5, Rep. Mark Harris, R-N.C., led a letter with Reps. Chuck Edwards, R-N.C., and Pat Harrigan, R-N.C., urging Gov. Josh Stein, North Carolina governor, to deploy the National Guard to Charlotte, N.C. as an emergency measure to stabilize the crisis.
  • On Nov. 5, the Charlotte-Mecklenburg Fraternal Order of Police cited the August stabbing of Iryna Zarutska and recent homicide clusters in a request for Guard help, lawmakers say.
  • The letter cites a 200% increase in Uptown Charlotte murders during the Oct. 5, 2024, report period, while CMPD’s third quarter shows an 8% citywide crime decline.
  • A spokesperson for Gov. Josh Stein said local law enforcement officers are best equipped to keep neighborhoods safe, while Mayor Lyles, Rep. Alma Adams, and Malcolm Graham opposed National Guard deployment as unnecessary.
  • Pointing to prior Guard deployments in Washington, D.C. and Memphis, the letter cites crime reductions, including twelve days without a homicide in D.C., and Tennessee Gov. Bill Lee’s partnership led to 850 arrests, 44 firearms seized, while courts and costs face limits.
