GOP senator says he’s open to compromise on Trump’s nominee to chair the Federal Reserve
Sen. Thom Tillis may back a Senate Banking Committee-led probe into Fed chair Jerome Powell’s renovation cost overruns to unblock Kevin Warsh’s confirmation.
- Sen. Thom Tillis, R-N.C., signaled Thursday he could support a compromise allowing the Senate Banking Committee to start hearings on Kevin Warsh but rejected ending the DOJ probe into Jerome Powell.
- Facing the standoff, Tillis last month said he would block Fed nominees until the DOJ drops its criminal probe of Powell, `But at the end of the day, if that's not resolved, I'm not going to allow a successful markup to occur`.
- Framed as oversight, the plan would hand the Powell probe from DOJ to the Senate Banking Committee to investigate cost overruns on the Fed's $2.5 billion renovation of two Washington, D.C., office buildings.
- The compromise could clear the way for the Senate Banking Committee to start hearings on Warsh, but Tillis said, 'And I believe that most Democrats are not going to vote for it, so I don't see a path,' highlighting partisan limits.
- Beyond confirmation fights, the standoff touches the Fed's independence from politics, and Sen. Thom Tillis said he believes the White House was surprised and unaware of the DOJ investigation.
