Google Adds Android Protection Against AI Deepfake Scam Calls
The feature is on by default and uses silent device checks to warn users when a trusted caller may be a scammer.
On Tuesday, Google announced that Android is launching fake call detection to protect against AI-powered deepfake impersonation scams, rolling out globally this month for Android 12+ devices starting with Pixel phones.
Yearly financial losses from impersonation scams total $2.95 billion as scammers use AI-powered tools to spoof caller IDs and clone voices, often demanding money like $100 for fake emergencies.
Rich Communication Services enables the system to operate silently using a "silent confirmation signal" to verify calls, warning users via the Google Phone app if a device lacks the necessary handshake.
Both caller and recipient must use the Google Phone app with RCS enabled for verification to function; Google noted it is "possible for other apps and device manufacturers to adopt this technology" in the future.
This security tool headlines the June Android Drop, which also brings new features to Google Play Books and Google Photos, with more updates expected in coming months as Android 17 enters beta testing.
