Gmail Now Shows AI-Generated Summaries by Default on Mobile

  • Google has begun automatically showing AI-generated summaries for long email threads on the Gmail mobile app for Workspace users in 2025.
  • This feature builds on a manual summary function introduced last year, shifting Gemini AI from optional to default for certain complex threads.
  • Summaries appear as bullet points above emails in English, update dynamically with new replies, and users with smart features enabled will see them automatically on mobile only.
  • Google estimates that it will take around two weeks for the new feature to become available to all users. Those who wish to opt out of the automatic summaries can do so by disabling smart features in Gmail, but this will also turn off other AI-powered tools such as Smart Compose and Smart Reply.
  • This rollout marks a larger push to integrate AI into Gmail, aiming to save time while raising questions about balancing convenience and user control.
