Google commits $1 billion for AI training at US universities

UNITED STATES, AUG 6 – Google will provide cash, cloud credits, and free access to advanced AI tools to over 100 U.S. universities in a $1 billion, three-year education initiative.

  • Committing $1 billion over three years, Google pledged on Wednesday to provide AI training and tools to U.S. higher education institutions and nonprofits, Sundar Pichai said.
  • Amid rival pushes from OpenAI, Anthropic and Amazon, research mapping AI's educational concerns prompts Google’s $1 billion AI training initiative for US universities.
  • Participating schools may receive cash funding and cloud computing credits for AI training, and the $1 billion also includes paid AI tools like the Gemini chatbot given free to students.
  • More than 100 universities, including Texas A&M and the University of North Carolina, have signed on, and Google acknowledges `many more questions` remain about AI concerns, said Senior Vice President James Manyika.
  • Google hopes to expand the program to every accredited nonprofit college in the U.S. and is discussing similar plans abroad, with current students as the first cohort of `AI natives`.
