- The Competition and Markets Authority launched separate mobile-platform probes in January, finding Apple and Google hold an effective duopoly with 90-100% of devices in the United Kingdom.
- Its probe found unpredictable app reviews, inconsistent app-store search rankings and in-app purchase commissions of as much as 30%, while CMA roadmaps propose fair reviews and allowing developers to steer users outside app stores.
- Rejecting the move, Google said `We simply do not see the rationale for today's designation decision`, while Apple warned the measures could risk weaker privacy and delayed features, the CMA said the designation does not imply wrongdoing.
- With SMS powers, the Competition and Markets Authority could require easier data transfers and fair app rankings, affecting an app economy generating 1.5% of the UK's GDP and supporting around 400,000 jobs.
