GM, LG Energy Solutions to Make Cheaper EV Batteries at Tennessee Site

SPRING HILL, TENNESSEE, JUL 14 – GM and LG Energy Solution will begin commercial production of lower-cost lithium iron phosphate batteries by late 2027, aiming to reduce EV costs and diversify battery chemistry, officials said.

  • On July 14, 2025, Ultium Cells LLC will upgrade its Spring Hill, Tennessee plant, scaling LFP cell output, building on a $2.3-billion 2021 investment.
  • With buyers slowing, the industry has gravitated to LFP batteries, and Mary Barra said GM would invest $35 billion from 2020 to 2025, despite sluggish demand.
  • In contrast to NMC chemistry, LFP batteries offer lower cost and high safety, powering over 80% of EVs in China.
  • GM said the LFP-powered Silverado EV will deliver about 350 miles of range while cutting $6,000 in battery costs, and that both the next-generation Bolt EV and a Silverado EV trim will use LFP cells.
  • By late 2027, Ultium said commercial LFP production will start after assembly line conversion later this year, boosting U.S. battery capacity.
