Global Affairs says it’s not aware of any Canadians affected by Ebola outbreak in DRC
WHO says the outbreak has nearly 600 suspected cases and 139 suspected deaths as Canada reports no known citizens affected.
Global Affairs Canada said Wednesday it is not aware of any Canadians affected by the rapidly spreading Ebola outbreak in the Democratic Republic of Congo and neighboring Uganda.
The outbreak involves the Bundibugyo virus, a species of Ebola with no existing vaccines or treatments, and has been deemed a public health emergency of international concern.
WHO Director-General Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus reported almost 600 suspected cases and 139 suspected deaths, though he noted the epidemic's true scale is likely much larger.
There are 2,300 Canadians registered in the Democratic Republic of Congo and 1,300 in Uganda, with consular officials ready to assist those requesting help leaving the region.
UNICEF-Donated supplies totaling more than 15 tons arrived at Bunia National Airport on Tuesday, where workers off-loaded the shipment to support medical response efforts in Congo.
