Old Speckled Hen Beers Sold by Greene King to Damm UK
The deal shifts brewing to Damm UK as Greene King refocuses on pubs, while the brands still account for more than half of its retailer beer sales.
Greene King has sold its Old Speckled Hen brand, including Old Golden Hen, Old Crafty Hen, Old Master Hen, and Low Alcohol Old Speckled Hen, to Spanish brewer Damm UK.
The divestment supports Greene King's strategic shift to focus on its 2,500 pubs, restaurants, and hotels, moving away from producing beer for retail shelves. The firm will continue brewing Greene King IPA and Abbot Ale for pub venues.
During a "transition process," production will remain at the Westgate Brewery to ensure flavor consistency, before shifting to the Damm Eagle Brewery in Bedford, ultimately leading to Westgate's closure.
Luke White, Managing Director of Damm UK, said the firm aimed to "take the brand forward into its next chapter," reconnecting the Damm Eagle Brewery to its historic British production roots.
Greene King intends to open a new £40 million brewery in Bury by summer 2027, aiming to optimize operations and focus on supplying its own pubs, as it has done for more than 200 years.
