Ghana scales up fight against obstetric fistula with free surgeries in five hospitals
- On May 23, 2025, Ghana introduced a countrywide program providing complimentary obstetric fistula surgeries at five key hospitals, among them Komfo Anokye Teaching Hospital located in Kumasi.
- The effort coordinated by PEFIC addresses obstetric fistula, a condition mainly resulting from prolonged labor that causes uncontrollable leakage of urine or feces.
- The program offers extensive medical treatment and assistance to help survivors overcome isolation, depression, and societal stigma, addressing misunderstandings among some family members who view the condition as a form of punishment.
- In Kumasi, 50 women underwent screening at Komfo Anokye Teaching Hospital, with 15 selected for surgical repair under this program, which provides support for travel, the operation itself, and care during a fortnight-long recuperation period, at an approximate cost of $700 per patient.
- This initiative focuses on eliminating obstetric fistula across Ghana within the next decade, advancing the country’s goal of sustainable maternal health services while empowering affected women and restoring their dignity.
