Young Ukrainians asylum seekers fleeing the war for Germany surges
The number of young Ukrainian fleeing the war and seeking asylum in Germany has surged, following Ukraine’s decision to partially lift its travel ban for men aged 18 to 22, according to figures from the German Interior Ministry.
Following the lifting of the travel ban for Ukrainian men between 18 and 22 years of age in August, the number of asylum requests in Germany from this group increased from 100 to about 1,000 per week, and reported to the Ministry of Internal Affairs of the Federal Republic of Germany.
According to German authorities, the number of Ukrainians entering Germany has increased significantly: while 7,961 arrivals were registered in May, the number reached 11,277 in August, and as many as 18,755 in September.
Ukraine relaxed the exit rules for men between 18 and 22 years at the end of August. Since then, according to the Ministry of the Interior, the number of Ukrainians coming to Germany has increased tenfold. The Federal Authority cannot currently assess whether the development continues.
According to data from the German Interior Ministry, the increase began immediately after Ukraine lifted its travel ban on men aged 18-22 on August 28.
"The lifting of the travel ban has led to an increase in the number of applications for protection in Germany among a group of Ukrainian men aged 18 to 22... from around 100 per week before the ban came into force to around 1,000 per week now," said an Interior Ministry spokesman.
