- On Wednesday, German Ambassador to India Jasper Wieck announced that Germany has completed its domestic approval process for the Project-75I submarine programme and is prepared to sign the government-to-government pact, which now awaits final approval from the Indian government.
- The Project-75I programme has been in the pipeline for close to two decades, with earlier attempts repeatedly stalling over technical specifications and technology transfer requirements. It now operates under the Strategic Partnership model pairing foreign manufacturers with Indian companies.
- ThyssenKrupp Marine Systems is the frontrunner for the contract, bidding alongside Mumbai-based state-run shipyard Mazagon Dock Shipbuilders Limited . "I think the most important about this deal is that it is a real partnership," Wieck said.
- The Indian Navy plans to induct conventionally powered submarines fitted with air-independent propulsion to replace aging platforms. The deal requires formal approval from the Cabinet Committee on Security before finalization.
- Beyond the submarine pact, India and Germany are exploring broader defence cooperation in cybersecurity, missile technology, and unmanned systems. Wieck cited the conflict in Ukraine as a driver for increased reliance on such technology going forward.
