Germany factory output lowest since pandemic in 2020
GERMANY, AUG 7 – Manufacturing declines in machinery and pharmaceuticals, plus a 2.1% fall in exports to the US, contributed to the steepest drop in German industrial output since May 2020, Destatis said.
- In June 2025, Germany's factory output declined by 1.9 percent month-on-month, reaching its lowest point since the onset of the pandemic.
- This downturn occurs amid sustained pressure from elevated energy prices, strong competition from China, and the implementation on Thursday of a new U.S. tariff increasing duties on exports from the European Union to 15 percent.
- Data showed German exports to the United States fell 2.1 percent in June while overall exports rose 0.8 percent month-on-month, with industrial orders dropping 1.0 percent in June.
- Carsten Brzeski expressed doubt that exports will once again serve as a major engine of growth for Germany’s economy in the near future, while Helena Melnikov described the tariffs as a considerable challenge for German businesses.
- The data underscores fragility in Germany's economy, which may shrink further as the tariff impact deepens, making business more difficult amid ongoing trade negotiations.
