George Washington's 1757 Beer Recipe Revived Ahead of America's 250th Anniversary
The partnership produced a faithful low-alcohol brew and a modern version with 6.5% alcohol for TALEA taprooms and New York City restaurants.
The New York Public Library has partnered with New York City-based TALEA Beer Company to recreate George Washington's 1757 "small beer" recipe, launching a modern interpretation called Liberty Lager to commemorate the nation's 250th anniversary.
Washington's handwritten recipe, titled "To Make Small Beer," appears in his 1757 military journal; historians note the low-alcohol beverage served as a safer water alternative for troops prone to dysentery during the Seven Years War.
TALEA co-founder Tara Hankinson said the brewery aimed to honor the original recipe while making Liberty Lager, a 6.5 percent alcohol brew described as "food-friendly" and refreshing for modern consumers.
Liberty Lager is available at TALEA taprooms and New York City restaurants, while the library will offer samples of the historical small beer at various America250 events this summer.
The collaboration is part of the library's "250 Years: Life, Liberty, and the Pursuit of Happiness" programming, which also includes a reading list of 250 books and display of Thomas Jefferson's copy of the Declaration of Independence.
